The TBM Aurora, noted for its 12.5-meter diameter cutterhead and 100-meter length, has begun its journey to carve out the 4.4-kilometer Melito Tunnel beneath the Southern Apennines. This marks the final tunnel segment on the route, constructed for Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), part of the FS Italiane Group. Previously, Aurora completed the Grottaminarda Tunnel and was reassembled after crossing the Ufita River for its current task. The machine operates at depths of up to 130 meters and is expected to install more than 22,200 precast concrete segments to form the tunnel lining. Over 140 workers will maintain operations around the clock.
The Melito Tunnel is the second-longest on the Apice-Hirpinia Section, which itself is a significant part of the Naples-Bari line, stretching 18.7 kilometers with nearly 70% of its length in tunnels. This follows the recent completion of the 6.5-kilometer Rocchetta Tunnel.
