The recent installation of Mapei tiling at Darlington Station marks a significant milestone in the £140 million transformation of the railway hub. This extensive project, led by BAM UK & Ireland and designed by Aecom in collaboration with Napper Architects, underscores a strategic enhancement of transport infrastructure crucial for the East Coast Main Line.
What Happened
The Tiling Company (Northern) Ltd completed the installation of a comprehensive Mapei tiling system covering more than 3,000 square meters at Darlington Station. This endeavor is a part of the station's ambitious redevelopment plan, which includes the addition of two new platforms connected by a 50-ton footbridge. The tiling project encompassed various areas, including the entrance hall, station concourse, and refurbished platforms and toilet facilities.
During the initial phase, a range of Mapei products were used to ensure a sound, level, and moisture-resistant surface before the tiles were laid. This included the application of Mapeproof One Coat epoxy damp proof membrane and Eco Prim Grip Plus adhesion promoter primer. The installation also utilized Ultraplan Renovation Screed 3240, a fibre-reinforced self-levelling compound, to create an even substrate. To manage substrate stresses, the Mapetex anti-fracture system was employed, and four different adhesives were used to secure the tiles. Post-installation, Mapei’s UltraCare team developed a cleaning regime to maintain the tiles' appearance and performance.
What This Means for Your Business
For businesses in the architecture, engineering, construction, and manufacturing (AECM) sectors, the Darlington Station project highlights the importance of integrating advanced materials and techniques in infrastructure development. The use of Mapei's low VOC EMICODE: EC1 Plus-certified products not only ensured a safe working environment but also aligned with sustainability goals by offsetting CO2 emissions. This project exemplifies how leveraging innovative materials can enhance both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of large-scale infrastructure projects.
For contractors and suppliers, participating in such significant transport infrastructure projects offers substantial opportunities. The deployment of specialized products like Mapei’s can set a precedent for future endeavors, emphasizing the critical role of material performance and environmental compliance in securing contracts.
What US Operators Should Watch
US operators should closely monitor similar infrastructure upgrades and the materials used, particularly those that prioritize sustainability and performance. As federal funding continues to support infrastructure improvements, understanding the procurement processes and compliance requirements, such as those related to sustainability certifications, becomes imperative. Tracking deadlines and bid opportunities for upcoming projects in the transport sector can provide a competitive edge.
