A joint venture between Gamuda and MiTAC Information Technology Corp has secured a significant contract worth T$29.22bn ($901m) for the Keelung Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system in Taiwan, marking a pivotal development in the region's infrastructure landscape. This contract, awarded by the Department of Rapid Transit Systems of the New Taipei City Government, underscores Taiwan's commitment to enhancing its urban transit capabilities.

What Happened
The Keelung MRT project encompasses the design and construction of a 15.6km track, integrating railway systems across 13 strategically located stations that will serve New Taipei City, Taipei City, and Keelung City. The joint venture between Malaysia's Gamuda and Taiwan's MiTAC Information Technology Corp will undertake this extensive project. Gamuda holds a majority stake of 72.84% in the joint venture, translating to a contract share of approximately RM2.71bn ($663m). MiTAC, a subsidiary of the MiTAC-Synnex Group, holds the remaining 27.16% stake.

The project, scheduled for a construction period of 2,820 days or about 7.7 years, will include comprehensive work such as trackwork, rolling stock, signalling, power supply, platform screen doors, communication systems, central monitoring systems, automatic fare collection systems, and depot maintenance equipment. Gamuda has highlighted that this venture is part of the additional works under the Xizhi–Donghu MRT project, which it secured on October 22, 2024.

What This Means for Your Business
For US AECM operators, this development highlights the expanding opportunities in international transit infrastructure projects. Companies involved in railway systems, communications, and construction can consider partnerships or expansions in Asian markets, where infrastructure development is gaining momentum. The project also demonstrates Gamuda's robust positioning in the global market, which could be a model for US firms looking to broaden their international footprint. Additionally, the successful application of advanced technologies in this project could inform similar ventures in the US, offering insights into enhancing operational efficiencies and integrating cutting-edge solutions.

What US Operators Should Watch
US operators should keep an eye on the evolving timeline of the Keelung MRT project, particularly as it progresses through different phases of construction and technology integration. Monitoring the joint venture's approach to compliance with local regulations and standards could provide valuable lessons for international projects. Furthermore, understanding the procurement processes utilized in this award can inform US firms on competitive positioning and bid strategy for future international contracts.
