Arup Designs Net Zero Carbon School Using IES VE Software

Arup has designed the Mynydd Isa Campus in Wales as a Net Zero Carbon in operation (NZCio) school using IES's Virtual Environment (VE) dynamic modelling software. The 10,500m², two-storey campus will serve over 1,300 pupils across nursery, primary, and secondary levels. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions by more than 100 tonnes annually and achieve BREEAM 'Excellent' certification. Completed in 2025, the design incorporates over 1,000 solar panels generating 500,000 kWh yearly, matching the building's energy consumption. IES VE software assessed energy performance and overheating risks under various climate scenarios, informing solutions like a cross-ventilation chimney and a classroom 'traffic light system' for window management. Arup committed to a 25-year performance guarantee to maintain efficiency and climate resilience. This project demonstrates how dynamic energy modelling can bridge design and operational performance, crucial for adapting infrastructure to rising heat and climate challenges.
