Youngstown State University (YSU) has been awarded a $1,513,568 grant by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) to spearhead the Connected Infrastructure and Industrial Cybersecurity Workforce Initiative. This initiative is a pivotal part of ARC's $45.5 million investment in 47 projects under the POWER Initiative, aimed at revitalizing economic opportunities in coal-impacted regions.

What Happened
YSU, along with partners from Ohio and Pennsylvania, will establish a training hub at the YSU Excellence Training Center—a facility already recognized for its contribution to advanced manufacturing training. The new initiative will focus on equipping a skilled workforce that is adept in smart and connected factory technologies. Training will cover areas such as operational technology/information technology systems, industrial networking, automation, robotics, cybersecurity, and drone systems. This comprehensive program is designed to provide short-term, hands-on credentialed training at no cost to 165 participants over three years, spanning multiple counties in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Project partners, including the Mahoning Valley Manufacturers Coalition and the Lawrence Mercer Manufacturers Coalition, are providing a combined $1,168,761 in matching funds. This collaborative effort underscores the regional commitment to aligning training with employer needs and creating pathways to high-quality careers.

What This Means for Your Business
For businesses in the architecture, engineering, construction, and manufacturing (AECM) sectors, this initiative represents a strategic opportunity to tap into a pool of newly skilled talent proficient in the latest smart factory technologies. As the industry shifts towards automation and connected systems, having access to a workforce trained in these areas is crucial. Companies can expect to see improvements in operational efficiencies and potentially lower training costs by hiring workers already versed in these technologies. Furthermore, this initiative aligns with federal compliance requirements such as CMMC and NIST, ensuring that participants are prepared to meet the cybersecurity standards increasingly demanded by government contracts.

What US Operators Should Watch
AECM professionals should keep an eye on the progress of this initiative and its outcomes, as it may serve as a model for similar projects across the nation. Companies should also monitor ARC's future funding opportunities under the POWER Initiative, as these could provide additional resources for workforce development and infrastructure projects. With the growing emphasis on smart factory integration, staying informed about training programs and compliance deadlines will be essential for maintaining a competitive edge.
