NBS, part of Hubexo, partnered with Circular Ecology to release the 'NBS Guide: Embodied Carbon Calculations'. This guide provides construction professionals with a practical framework to embed upfront carbon data (Modules A1-A5 per BS EN 15804) directly into BIM objects using a geometry-led approach. It addresses the fragmentation of embodied carbon data, a key barrier to reducing project carbon footprints. The guide covers four BIM object types: Layered Items, Layered Assemblies, Items, and Composite Assemblies, detailing methodologies for calculating embodied carbon by multiplying quantity by emission factors and considering material densities.

Dr Lee Jones, Hubexo's head of sustainability and guide co-author, emphasized that the guide translates complex standards into practical methodologies compatible with existing BIM workflows. This enables transparent, consistent carbon data, supporting informed design decisions and the construction sector's transition to net zero.

The guide equips designers to integrate embodied carbon calculations from project inception, fostering better carbon management in design processes. This advancement is critical for project managers, engineers, architects, and contractors aiming to meet sustainability targets and regulatory requirements.
