Holcim UK, in collaboration with Fibre Concrete Solutions and Kiernan Construction, has successfully completed a major redevelopment at Peel Ports Group's Heysham facility. This project, which involved the construction of a durable roadway to handle hundreds of daily heavy goods vehicle (HGV) movements, underscores the importance of advanced material solutions in high-traffic industrial settings.
What Happened
Holcim UK was tasked with supplying over 4,500 cubic meters of specialized readymix concrete from its Lancaster RMX plant between April 2025 and May 2026. This effort was part of a broader redevelopment project at Heysham Port, which included the installation of a new multi-smart gate operating system and the revamping of a trailer park. The company provided a range of bespoke concrete mixes, including a standard CEM I concrete for general fill and a specialized Strike early-strength concrete. The latter was crucial in accelerating construction timelines, achieving trackable strength within 24 to 48 hours, compared to the typical 28 days for conventional concrete.
In areas subjected to heavy traffic, Holcim utilized a reinforced mix with steel fibres, eliminating the need for extensive steel mesh. This mix incorporated 20–30kg of steel fibres per cubic meter, ensuring the necessary strength and durability for long-term performance. Despite challenging weather conditions and the need for consistent high-volume deliveries, Holcim completed over 30 deliveries, maintaining product quality through its Holcim+ digital platform, which facilitated seamless ordering and real-time tracking.
What This Means for Your Business
For AECM professionals, this project highlights the strategic advantage of utilizing advanced concrete technologies like Holcim’s Strike mix. The ability to fast-track construction schedules without compromising on structural integrity can significantly enhance project timelines and reduce costs. Additionally, the integration of digital platforms for supply chain management can offer competitive advantages in project execution, ensuring timely deliveries and maintaining construction momentum.
Moreover, the use of fibre-reinforced concrete demonstrates a shift towards more sustainable and efficient construction practices, which can improve ROI by reducing labor and material costs associated with traditional reinforcement methods. This approach aligns with growing industry trends towards sustainability and efficiency, particularly in high-traffic and industrial environments.
What US Operators Should Watch
US operators should monitor the adoption of advanced concrete technologies and digital supply chain solutions within the industry. Keeping abreast of developments in early-strength concrete applications and digital ordering platforms could provide significant procurement and operational efficiencies. Additionally, the success of such projects in the UK may signal future opportunities for similar infrastructure upgrades in the US, particularly in high-traffic port facilities and industrial zones.
