The digitisation of construction and real estate is an imperative for buildings to be designed, constructed and operated more cost-effectively and deliver the changing needs of the building’s occupants. However, the author is unconvinced that technologies like AI, MI, Digital Twins, and BIM will deliver their promised benefits without the whole supply chain addressing the underlying fundamental need to deliver structured data.
Why It Matters
Classification is critical in the digital world because it ensures that data is actionable and can be consumed by different downstream solutions for estimating, scheduling, and management. Without structured data, these solutions cannot work effectively, and the sector will not be able to embark on a successful digitisation journey.
What's Next
The construction and real estate world needs to overcome its inertia to embracing structured data. Once this is achieved, the sector will be able to deliver a more predictable and actionable operational environment.
