Germany has awarded Berlin-based Ecoworks a €23 million contract to renovate 192 apartments across 12 buildings in Hagen, North Rhine-Westphalia. The project aims to reduce energy demand by 36% and is the country's largest pre-war cooperative housing renovation. Originally built in 1966, the 15,000 sq m buildings will be upgraded to KfW Efficiency House 55 standards. Prefabricated façade elements will speed up construction, while insulation, new windows, electric shutters, and photovoltaic systems will enable net carbon-neutral operations. The renovation will cut annual CO₂ emissions by 190 tonnes. Ecoworks founder Emanuel Heisenberg highlights the project's scalability due to high prefabrication levels. With three-quarters of German residential buildings needing energy upgrades but less than 1% renovated annually, this project sets a new benchmark for sustainable housing renovation in Germany.
