For the second consecutive year, projections of a decline in the sealcoating industry have not come to fruition at the contractor level, according to the Top 40 Sealcoating Contractors report for 2026\. Despite a contracting market, individual contractors are reporting growth, indicating resilience and adaptation in the sector.

**What Happened**
The analysis projected that the sealcoating industry's market value would fall, with an eleven-year compound annual growth rate of approximately -3.97%. This suggested a reduction in the Sealcoating Top 50 from $159.4 million in 2026 to $147.0 million in 2028\. However, the Top 40 Sealcoating Contractors reported $144.0 million in sealcoat-only revenue, which, while in line with the decline, does not reflect a complete downturn. Instead, the average revenue per contractor increased to $3.60 million, up 8.6% from 2025 and 17.7% from 2024\. This growth indicates that while the overall market faces challenges, individual contractors are effectively maintaining or expanding their business.

The total gross sales for the Top 40 reached $1.183 billion, with an average of $29.59 million per contractor. Although this is 18% below the 2025 Top 50 average, it highlights a shift in the revenue mix. Sealcoating now constitutes 26.3% of the average contractor's gross, up from 23.9% last year, reversing a previous downward trend.

**What This Means for Your Business**
For AECM professionals and contractors, these findings underscore the importance of strategic adaptation in a fluctuating market. The increase in per-contractor revenue suggests that businesses concentrating on sealcoating are either outperforming broader market trends or benefiting from a more selective market environment. As sealcoating becomes a more significant part of contractors' portfolios, there are opportunities for specialization and growth within this niche.

With changes in profit margins, where 35% of contractors reported margins above 20%, down from 46% last year, there is a noticeable shift towards a more competitive upper-middle band. This could indicate a need for contractors to focus on efficiency and cost management to maintain profitability.

**What US Operators Should Watch**
As the sealcoating industry adjusts to market dynamics, US operators should monitor shifts in revenue composition and profitability margins closely. Contractors should stay informed about potential federal funding opportunities and consider diversification within their service offerings to mitigate risks associated with market contraction. Additionally, staying updated with compliance requirements, such as CMMC and NIST, will be crucial in maintaining competitive positioning and securing future contracts.
